- BACKSTORY
- It was my birthday in 2017, less than a year after I had moved to Nashville. I woke up and felt led to go down town and walk around. I ended up at Sun's Diner and noticed to ladies walk in with what looked like very custom Luke Combs shirts. And his song Hurricane was hitting #1 and he was playing everywhere during CMA fest. So I said, those don't look like normal shirts, you must know him. They said wow, yes we do, we are friends with his mom. They ended up buying my breakfast and inviting me to come see Luke. When I rode with them to the show, we passed by the roundabout at the corner of the music city center and someone in the car said, wow what are those wooden things sticking out of the ground, they look like telephone poles. I said oh those are God's Pencils. He dropped them from heaven to show us he could get them all in the circle. And someone said Jonathan you should write a song called God's Pencils. So I sat down and did that over the coming months. I was self aware enough to know I couldn't write this one by myself because I had only been writing country for a year, I asked Will Duvall who seemed to be a wordsmith to come hop on it.

LYRICS
Written by Jonathan Pierce and Will Duvall
Verse 1
It’s just a dollar at a red light
Or a shoulder on a tough night
A quick call to a good ole friend
Just cause they been on your mind yeah
Chorus
It don’t take much
To write a little grace and love
In someone’s story
No It ain’t that hard
to show a little kindness
Where you are, Cause in the end
Big or small we can be
God’s pencils
Verse 2
Holdin the door when you don’t have to
Pay for the next car at a drive thru
Using the time off you been saving
Trade in that weeklong vacation
For 18 hours in a church van
cause someone’s house needs painting
Chorus
It don’t take much
To write a little grace and love
In someone’s story
No It ain’t that hard
to show a little kindness
Where you are,
Cause every act
Big or small, makes us all
God’s pencils
Verse 3
It’s not about me and you
That’s why we’re number two
Nothin fancy wood and lead
worn out eraser on the end
Til you‘re in his hand
Chorus
It don’t take much
To write a little grace and love
In someone’s story
No It ain’t that hard
to show a little kindness
Where you are,
Cause every act
Big or small,
No It ain’t that hard
to show a little kindness
Where you are, Cause in the end
Big or small, aren’t we all
God’s pencils?
