Alabama Roots, Nashville Sound: Jonathan Pierce Carves His Own Path in Country Music
NASHVILLE, TN – Emerging from the small-town charm of Hazel Green, Alabama, singer-songwriter Jonathan Pierce with the help of Smith Curry, is forging a distinctive sound in the country music landscape. Raised on a diverse soundtrack spanning classic and 90s rock, with early influences ranging from Soundgarden and Nirvana to the soulful sounds of Motown and the bluesy guitar riffs of Stevie Ray Vaughan, Pierce’s musical journey has been anything but conventional.
His initial foray into music began not with a guitar, but behind a drum kit, honing his skills to the complex rhythms of artists like Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters) and Danny Carey (Tool). This rhythmic foundation, coupled with a deep appreciation for lyrical storytelling, informs his unique approach to songwriting.
A pivotal moment in Pierce’s life led him back to Alabama in 2007, where a profound spiritual encounter ignited a new creative direction. This period saw the genesis of collaborative projects, including early songwriting with artist Shawn James.
In 2014, Pierce experienced both professional success and personal loss. His band, The Blue Jays Band, opened for Sister Hazel and released an album. However, the passing of his mother led him to pause the band and return home, marking a period of introspection and a deeper connection with his faith.
Turning to the acoustic guitar as an emotional outlet, Pierce began crafting deeply personal songs. Encouraged by his church community, he made the move to Nashville in 2016, channeling his experiences into a prolific period of songwriting. His debut single, the upbeat “Get Dirty In My Jeep,” released in 2018 on the same day he performed for VIP guests before Willie Nelson and Alison Krauss, offered a glimpse into his multifaceted artistry.
Recognizing his unique sound within the contemporary country scene, Pierce collaborated with producer Smith Curry to refine his musical vision. Early compositions included the poignant “Make It In Nashville,” a heartfelt tribute to his mother that evolved from a personal journal entry.
His involvement with the Nashville Songwriters Association International (NSAI) proved instrumental, providing valuable songwriting techniques and fostering collaborations with fellow writers such as Mason Douglas, Lori, and Will Duvall. These co-writing experiences enriched his craft, leading to notable songs like “Neon Whiskey” and “God’s Pencils.”
